5 Signs You Need a New Water Heater

You may be shocked at how easy it is to forget about your water heater’s age, or how hard it can be to notice a problem before it results in a mess.

There are a few signs that you can use to keep track of the state of your water heater. You’ll want to be watching for them to keep your equipment in the top shape.

Here are five potential signs it could be time to replace your water heater in the U.S.

1. It’s Starting to Display Its Age

Much like the other important appliances inside your house, your water heater has a defined life expectancy. When it gets to the end, it will function much less efficiently and could be costlier to fix than replacing it.

The typical water heater lifetime is approximately six to eight years. You won’t want your water heater to be in use for longer than 10 years, because this could lead to expensive damage in your house if it malfunctions.

It’s always possible for your water heater to run into problems sooner than this time, so be attentive to anything that seems odd.

2. Rust is Starting to Form

Rust is often an indication your water heater needs to be inspected. Rust is corrosive and can rapidly move to other components. This can create a leak or other malfunctions. If you see a bit on the tank or pipes, speak with a licensed professional.

3. Limited Heated Water

If your water heater is struggling to heat water, that’s an obvious sign an upgrade is required. Your heater may not be able to deliver any hot water because of too much sediment. The tank volume could also be too small for the volume of water your family requires.

This is particularly true for larger homes. The faster you deplete hot water, the more important it is to consider getting a new one.

4. You’re Hearing Strange Noises

Your water heater makes a little noise. If you notice rumbling noises coming from the tank on a frequent basis, that might mean a piece isn’t secure.

Strange sounds might also indicate there’s debris building up on top of the tank’s base. Too much buildup could push your water heater to work harder and increase your energy bills as a result.

Listen closely if you begin to note any strange noises, and give us a call immediately.

5. Sudden Leaks

If you discover puddles or dark patches close to your water heater, it’s a smart time to consider installing an updated unit right away.

These leaks are frequently a result of little fractures in the tank itself. The longer you disregard it, the more likely you’ll have a crisis when the tank gives out. (You can avoid a messy tank leak down the road by installing a tankless water heater, which doesn’t store water.)

Water damage is costly to take care of and a trouble you shouldn’t have to worry about.
